STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths
$19,500 Federal Government Grant
Wynnum West State School was one of only four Metro Brisbane Schools to successfully win a Federal Government Digital Technologies Grant for $19,500. This grant enables the school to have a part-time STEM Coach who has been working with the staff to implement the new Digital Technologies Curriculum.
Wynnum West State School Teachers spent half a day in Year Level Teams to unpack this new subject and plan exciting activities for students thus enabling them to be 21st Century learners. The STEM Coach works with local Primary and High Schools, sharing out successes and ideas.
With the remainder of the funds, iPads were purchased to support the Robotics Program at Wynnum West. Students use the iPads, to program our Ozobot robots using the coding program Ozoblockly.
Code Club
Wynnum West State School is a member of the Code Club Australia organisation. Students in Years 4 - 6 are able to develop their computer coding skills each week using a variety of computer program languages. The students have designed some amazing activities in these lessons and are well on their way to being the computer designers of the future!
High School Enrichment Program
Wynnum West State School works closely with Brisbane Bayside College with selected Code Club students in Years 5 and 6. During 2021 as a result of COVID-19 restrictions we have had to postpone visits between the schools, however we look forward to continuing the relationship when restrictions are eased.
In these programs the Code Club students have designed rockets, investigated computer programming and used these to control a variety of robots. All our children have thoroughly enjoyed this experience and they have enhanced their skills.
Competitions
This year, enthusiastic members of the Wynnum West Code Club entered the world record breaking Moon Hack competition. Students from around the Globe coded on one day, breaking the record for the most number of children coding at one time.
Several students entered the Queensland Premier's Coding Challenge this term. They were required to program a cyber-safety game for fellow students.
